Getting back into exercise can feel overwhelming.
You might think you need to train five days a week, completely change your diet, or push yourself harder every time you exercise.
But for many adults, especially when balancing work, family and everything else life brings, consistency is often more important than intensity.
The goal isn’t to have a perfect week. It’s to build a routine you can actually maintain.
What does consistency look like?
Consistency doesn’t necessarily mean exercising every day.
Australia’s updated 2026 movement guidelines recommend that adults include moderate to vigorous physical activity on most days, muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week, and regular mobility, balance and coordination work. They also recommend breaking up long periods of sitting. Health and Ageing Dept. Australia
That might look like:
- Strength training two or three times a week
- Walking on your non-training days
- Getting up regularly if you spend a lot of time sitting
- Adding mobility and balance exercises
- Gradually increasing what your body can handle
The important part is creating a routine that fits your actual life.
You don’t have to destroy yourself in every workout
One of the biggest mistakes people make when returning to exercise is doing too much too soon.
A hard workout might feel productive, but if you’re so sore that you don’t want to move for the next few days, it can make staying consistent much harder.
Instead, focus on progressive training.
Start at a level that’s appropriate for you, learn good technique, and gradually build your strength, fitness and confidence.
Strength training is particularly useful because it can help maintain muscle and bone strength as we age. Healthdirect recommends strength exercises at least twice a week, with an emphasis on good technique and gradually allowing the body to adapt. Healthdirect
The real goal? Making exercise part of your lifestyle
The best training routine isn’t necessarily the hardest one.
It’s the one you can keep coming back to.
For someone living around St Ives and Sydney’s North Shore, that could mean finding a training environment where you can fit sessions around work, family and your existing commitments rather than trying to completely rearrange your life.
At Altern8 Training, our focus is on helping people build strength, improve their fitness and stay consistent through technique-focused coaching and a supportive community.
You don’t need to be incredibly fit before you start.
You just need to start somewhere.
Then keep showing up.
